Race One with Daniel
At one point in Q2 we were 4th fastest, ended up 9th, outside of row 3. Â Made a slow launch but worked back to 10th at the end of lap one. Â Lap 2, 8th and into the 2.16’s for the first time. Â Lap 3, 6th leading the group chasing the lead pack. Â Rammed in the last turn of lap 5 while battling at the front of the chase pack. Â Rider is fine, bike is ready.
Moto America @ Miller with Daniel Costilla
8th out of 26 in P1, 3.4 back from the leader. But check out my riders Lorenzo like times: After working his times down in his first ride on the bike his last two laps were 2.19.458 & 2.19.487. Some time to think, a gearing change, different fork springs and oil and back out for Q1. First flying lap was a 2.18.619, guess he liked the changes. 7th out of 26, 2.2 back from the leaders who went .5 faster than P1.
Tony Nolley‘s front rim was on the bike for all this. The weather is perfect but the rim on the bike was bent from crash damage. Thanks to Tony Nolley I was able to roll over to Dunlop early and ask them to swap the tires for me then see the KTM guys later for a new wheel.
Another gearing change, some cleaning and we are ready for tomorrow.
Day 1 at Miller with Daniel
Busy day. Load in started at 10am. Got parked. Set up the pit. Helped KTM lay out their floor. Got the bike. Changed fork and shock springs. Set the ride height front & rear. Set the clickers. Changed the gearing. Topped off the water. Set the controls. Checked all the nuts & bolts. Put the numbers on straight. Installed the timer & transponder. Passed tech. Went to the entrant meeting where Niccole Cox did an outstanding job. Got done with the bike at 9:48 pm. Note my TZ weather station next to the Box Clock.
Every Night At Ten I Fail The Weed …#82
In Episode 82 of Deep Thinking, racers Ed Sorbo and Michael Gougis demonstrate their lack of understanding about the linear nature of time and how asking listeners to call in while recording the podcast is an exercise in futility. A discussion ensues about flipping race tires, and why flipping a tire that is badly worn on one side is usually such a bad idea. Sorbo uncorks a gorgeous math-related joke. Gougis once again uses the word roach as an adjective.

Night & Day!
Ed,
I just wanted to say thank you for the work you did on my suspension. What a night and day difference with the bike! It is so nimble and responsive to the road it feels like I’m just along for the ride rather than having to dodge the wonderful bumps of New England.
Thanks again,
Robert

It’s 81, Asshole … #81
In Episode 81 of Deep Thinking, racers Ed Sorbo and Michael Gougis wonder when the last time a MotoGP rider got fired mid-season, and whether Andrea Iannone might become the latest name on that list of shame. A discussion ensues about Jorge Lorenzo’s nerves of steel. Gougis expresses his admiration for a pudgy Japanese rider. Ed’s Catherine is not amused when Gougis is disrepectful toward broccoli and hits him with a look would make tungsten wilt.

Crew Chief for Daniel Costilla
Hi everyone. I would like to introduce my crew chief Ed Sorbo for this coming event at Miller Motor Sports Park with RoadRacing World Wild Cards Team. Here is some information about my crew chief.
Daniel Costilla, international road racer and up-and-coming riding
talent, has taken aim at the MotoAmerica KTM RC 390 Cup series, and is
scheduled to grid up when the series hits the storied pavement of Utah
Motorsports Campus in Tooele, Utah later this month.
To bolster his campaign, Costilla has enlisted Lindemann Engineering’s
Ed Sorbo to serve as crew chief for the program.
“I first met Daniel and his family when we shared a garage at a
Fastrack Riders event at Auto Club Speedway,” Sorbo says. “With my
experience racing 125cc and 250cc two-stroke GP machines, I solved a
problem they were having with Daniel’s Honda RS125. Daniel is a very
talented young rider, and I’m looking forward to using my experience
with lightweight racebikes to help Daniel get up to speed. I’m also
looking forward to experiencing a MotoAmerica event. Since its
beginning, the series has been impressively professional, and I’m
excited to have a chance to participate in revitalizing American road
racing.”

I Can’t Do That, Dave … #80
In Episode 80 of Deep Thinking, racers and theoreticians Ed Sorbo and Michael Gougis theorize about what up with Michelin’s MotoGP tires. A discussion ensues about spacecraft, computers and beating someone with the jawbone of an ass. Uber-cool dog Tiki hangs around in the background, luxuriating in having his own pool.
