The parts are here! First step was to clean the bike. Next step was to do enough work to find out everything that the bike needed. Now we have the parts and still have enough time to order more stuff if I missed something. It’s like I’ve built race bikes before.

Iceman Ninja & Laura

Iceman Ninja & Laura

We had a fun day at Willow today with Tony and JU riding again and Laura riding Willow for the first time.  She enjoyed the track and riding the Iceman Ninja.

The new front end came with a red fender but that would just not do. So now the TTR fender and number plate fit on the CR triple clamps.

Our TTR 125 has a drum brake front end. We want a disk brake front end. The best way to change out a front end is to replace everything including the triple clamps. The steering stem and bearing sizes are always close. Press out the stem, a little lathe work, make a spacer and presto.

The next step is to shorten the forks because these are 4 inches longer than the stock forks and to change the spring rate and damping. Lindemann Engineering will handle that bit.

The team name is, Dollars & Sense. Never pass up a chance to play with words. The first four riders are James Bush, Ed Sorbo, Tommy Bencharit and Eric Anderson. We will have a total of six riders.

Crew Chief Robert Rhyu and I put in a full day on the bike today. Carb clean, clean inside the air box, oil change, clean oil screen, check clutch, replace damaged bolts and fixed messed up threads, remove old chain & sprockets, clean off globs of old chain lube, clean & grease brake and shift pivots and more.

In other words we started from the inside and fixed all the stuff that can go wrong. Still a lot to be done but now we have a plan and know what parts we need.

James Bush of M Gymkhana and I are entering a Yamaha TTR125 in the next M1GP 24 Hour Race, Sept 24-25.

This is Post One in the story of what will be my 14th 24 hour race. James delivered the bike and a disk brake front end to me at ACS this past weekend. All my bikes get a bath after each weekend and the TTR joined in the fun.

Stay tuned for more posts through out the build, testing and the race.

May The Toad Fight With You #86

In Episode 86 of Deep Thinking, the only motorcycle road racing podcast that isn’t afraid to compare cool motorcycles and cool airplanes, racers Ed Sorbo and Michael Gougis discuss how having a big lead in the points makes you even harder to catch. Robert and Tony hang out in the background. Roland Sands offers a positive aesthetic assessment of the MotoAmerica paddock at Laguna Seca. Gougis isn’t afraid to point out that Toni Elias might be his new hero.
